Questions

IRS Payment Plans & Tax Debt Relief FAQs

11 answers to the questions clients ask us most. Don't see yours? Ask us directly.

Ask a question

Can the IRS really settle for less?

Yes, through an Offer in Compromise, but only when the amount offered reflects what you can realistically pay. We tell you honestly whether you are a good candidate.

How do I stop a wage garnishment?

Usually by getting into an agreed resolution, such as an installment agreement, and requesting release of the levy.

Do penalties and interest keep growing?

Interest continues until the balance is paid, and some penalties keep accruing. We also look at penalty relief.

Can I set up a payment plan online?

Often, yes. The IRS online payment agreement tool covers many balances below certain limits. Larger or more complex cases need a financial statement and negotiation.

Will a tax lien hurt my credit score?

The major credit bureaus no longer include tax liens on credit reports, but a lien is a public record and can complicate selling or refinancing property.

What is a Collection Due Process hearing?

A right to appeal to the IRS Independent Office of Appeals, generally within 30 days of a final notice of intent to levy. It pauses most collection while the appeal is considered.

Can tax debt be wiped out in bankruptcy?

Some older income tax debts can be discharged if specific conditions are met. We work with your bankruptcy attorney to check.

Can the IRS affect my passport?

Yes. Seriously delinquent tax debt can lead to passport denial or revocation, though an agreed resolution generally stops that.

Who will represent me before the IRS?

Representation before the IRS is limited by Treasury Circular 230 to CPAs, enrolled agents and attorneys. Your case is handled by a credentialed representative who signs Form 2848 with you.

Will hiring you stop IRS collection?

Not automatically. Collection usually pauses once a resolution request, such as an installment agreement or appeal, is properly filed. We move quickly to get that protection in place.

What does resolution cost?

It depends on the number of years and the complexity of the case. We review your IRS transcripts first, then give you a written quote.
