Questions

Amended Tax Returns FAQs

11 answers to the questions clients ask us most. Don't see yours? Ask us directly.

Ask a question

How far back can I amend?

To claim a refund, generally within three years of the original filing date or two years from when you paid the tax, whichever is later.

Will amending trigger an audit?

Amending does not by itself trigger an audit. Correcting an error yourself is usually viewed better than the IRS finding it.

How long do amended returns take?

Amended returns take longer to process than original ones, often several months. We track status for you.

Can amended returns be e-filed?

Yes. Form 1040-X can be e-filed for recent tax years, which is faster and easier to track than paper.

Do I need to amend my state return too?

Usually, if the federal change affects your state taxable income. Many states require you to report federal changes within a set period.

Should I amend for a math error?

No. The IRS corrects math errors itself. You also don't need to amend just because you forgot to attach a form; the IRS will ask for it if needed.

How do partnerships amend?

Most partnerships cannot simply file an amended Form 1065. They file an administrative adjustment request, which follows its own rules. We handle that process.

Will amending delay my original refund?

If you are still waiting for your original refund, it is usually best to wait until it arrives before filing an amendment.

How much does tax preparation cost?

Fees depend on the forms involved, the number of states and how organised your records are. After a short consultation we give you a written quote before any work starts.

Is my information secure?

Yes. Documents are exchanged through an encrypted client portal, and we follow a written information security plan as the FTC Safeguards Rule requires of tax preparers.

Can you prepare returns for prior years?

Yes. We prepare current and past-year federal and state returns, which is useful if you are catching up or amending.
