Questions

IRS Notices & Letters FAQs

11 answers to the questions clients ask us most. Don't see yours? Ask us directly.

Ask a question

What is a CP2000?

A notice proposing changes because income reported to the IRS does not match your return. It is not a bill, and you can agree or dispute it.

How long do I have to respond?

It depends on the notice, often 30 days. Check the date on the letter and send it to us promptly.

Is the letter real?

The IRS first contacts people by mail, not by text or social media. We can verify a notice for you.

Should I call the IRS myself?

You can, but hold times are long. As an authorised representative we can use the IRS Practitioner Priority Service and handle the call for you.

What if the notice is wrong?

Respond by the deadline with an explanation and supporting documents. Many notices are resolved with one clear response.

The IRS changed my refund. What can I do?

If you received a math error notice such as a CP12 and disagree, you generally have 60 days to ask the IRS to reverse the change.

How can I tell if a notice is genuine?

Check the notice number on IRS.gov and log in to your IRS online account to see if it shows the same balance. We can verify it for you.

I think someone filed a return in my name. What now?

We help you file Form 14039, respond to identity verification letters and set up an Identity Protection PIN for future years.

Who will represent me before the IRS?

Representation before the IRS is limited by Treasury Circular 230 to CPAs, enrolled agents and attorneys. Your case is handled by a credentialed representative who signs Form 2848 with you.

Will hiring you stop IRS collection?

Not automatically. Collection usually pauses once a resolution request, such as an installment agreement or appeal, is properly filed. We move quickly to get that protection in place.

What does resolution cost?

It depends on the number of years and the complexity of the case. We review your IRS transcripts first, then give you a written quote.
